My cousin had one more question: How to teach a subject that you are not good at?
Here are my thoughts on that subject!
Honestly, I use Christian books, so I am not good in a lot of the history stuff, or the Bible stuff for that matter :) Math can also be a stumbling block for some people, but if you commit to reading something (like math or history) ahead of time, you will pick it up, or pick it back up, pretty quickly. It is just elementary stuff!
~~Also, once they get into high school age, the children practically school themselves (they realize how quickly it can be done if they are self motivated and then they come to you only when they have a question). ~~
That is one of the reasons I use "Christian liberty press" and "modern curriculum Press"-(for math) books and not Abecca. Abecca is geared toward a Christian School setup. In the children's workbooks with Abecca it is set up to where if you have not TAUGHT the class before, sometimes you don't have a clue. Modern Curriculum Press is set up where the child (or you) can go through the workbook itself and learn as you go. It is very helpful for both parent and child. Also, be honest if you tell your children that you are not sure about something but you both can work to find an answer, that will build their confidence, not tear it down. They will realize that there are something that even adults don't know, and it's OK to have to look for the answer and go to other places for help.
Use your resources. Your husband--your mom or dad-- friends. There is nothing wrong with someone else teaching the children for a subject or even just a lesson until YOU have had some refresher lessons too. I had tons of questions about how to teach the boys to read at first. A woman from my church took my hand and walked me through stuff until I felt confident teaching the boys.
Keep in mind that every child may not learn the same. You will catch on quickly to their different styles. Jeffrey couldn't subtract 7-4 on paper at first, but if I asked him if he had 7 colored pencils and Jordan took 4 how many he would have left, he would answer without a pause "3!" It's all in the delivery sometimes. You know your children, maybe not on an academic level yet, but you will learn quickly!
Have fun and don't stress.
