I have started a bible study with Riky. I study out a topic. Then I send him a verse every day that he is away, through a text... I have decided to post it on here, not only to keep track of it myself, but that in hopes that it may help others.
Right now the topic is taking our thoughts captive.
We have been dealing with a lot of issues that are from our past, both before marriage and after marriage. We both struggle with keeping our thoughts on the present and not dwelling in the past. I hope this study will help someone else with this struggle.
Study #1
II Corrinthians 10:5
Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
This verse says "Casting down" which means to overthrow anything that puts itself over the wisdom that God gives us. And to bring captive EVERY THOUGHT to the OBEDIENCE of God. If a thought doesn't fall into a category that would qualify as an obedient thought, then it is to be overthrown by an act of your will!
Study # 2
Philippians 4:8
Finally bretheren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report; if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.
So, if you don't get stuck at the word true (meaning that if you don't start saying something like "I AM thinking on things that are true. These things did really happen.") and keep reading... and keep reading... you get to the semicolon that qualifies these thoughts. So it can be read like this:
Whatsoever things are true; if there be any virtue and praise, think on these things.
Whatsoever things are honest; if there be any virtue and praise, think on these things.
Whatsoever things are just; if there be any virtue and praise, think on these things.
Whatsoever things are pure; if there be any virtue and praise, think on these things.
Whatsoever things are lovely; if there be any virtue and praise, think on these things.
Whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue and praise, think on these things.
That is how God wants us to gauge our thoughts. Do they meet these requirements? If not, we shouldn't think on them.
